It was still snowing and people were getting a little bit agitated at not being able to get outside and play in it. Some of the guys from Ski Beat, (a chalet holiday company behind us that drink in the bar a lot) had built a kicker (a jump) out the back so I had a few goes on that with them. Apart from that everyone spent their time watching films, answering emails, anything to pass the time it takes for the weather system to pass. Then one morning the snow stopped. I looked out at the slopes opposite us and thought, theres a lot of people out there today. It appeared that all the snow had coincided with half term week for all of Europe, and the slopes were absolutely rammed. We all had fun up there, but it was rare to find some powder that hadn’t been completely tracked. It also meant that many of the pistes had been flattened and the snow pushed away from them faster than it should’ve been. How dare those holidaymakers think they can turn up here and ski in the snow we’ve waited all season for! I went out with Phil, one of the new guys to teach him how to snowboard. He did really well, but kept complaining about how much his ankle was hurting. I thought it was just your average ‘learning to snowboard’ pains. I’d not heard of anyone seriously damaging their ankle before, well before he got signed off from work for four days by the doctor, with the added possibility that he might be sent home if it didn’t heal properly. I decided at that point I’m never ever going to take out any learner boarders again. I’ve taught a bunch of people the basics, but to have 2 people sent home in 3 weeks while I’ve been trying to teach them is a bit too much for my karma levels. Thankfully, Phil’s ankle healed and he now wants me to take him out again in a couple of weeks to carry on where he left off. I’ve still not decided if I will or not yet… As
for my snowboarding, I was chatting to Chris, the maintenance guy who’s
a really good boarder, and one of the guests who’d just had a freestyle
lesson and they taught me the proper way to attempt a 180. I’d been
doing it wrong since I first started, and I can now just about pull one
off, meaning that hopefully I’ll be on to something new by the end
of the season, which is coming up faster than is entirely comfortable
at the moment...
